Install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Free

The preferred (and easiest) approach to obtain SP1 is to enable automatic updating in Windows Update in Control Panel and wait for Windows 7 to tell you that SP1 is available for installation. The installation takes around 30 minutes, and you’ll need to restart your computer about halfway through.

To see if Windows 7 SP1 is already installed on your PC, click the Start button, then right-click Computer and select Properties.

If Service Pack 1 appears under Windows edition, it is already installed on your computer.

Before you start.

Check whether the computer you’re using is 32-bit or 64-bit.

  • You’ll need to know if your computer is running 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) versions of Windows 7. Choose the Start button, now right-click Computer and choose Properties. The version of Windows 7 is shown next to the System type.

Take backups of essential files.

  • Before installing the update, be sure to back up any essential files, images, or movies to an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or the cloud.

Plug into your computer and connect to the internet.

  • Make sure the gadget is plugged in and connected to the Internet.

Deactivate antivirus applications.

Some antivirus software may prohibit or slow down SP1 installation. You can temporarily disable your antivirus program prior to installation. If you do so, be aware of the potential hazards and re-enable the antivirus program as soon as SP1 is finished installing.

Troubleshooting issues when installing Windows SP1:

If you attempt to install SP1 and receive an error notice stating that the installation was unsuccessful, this might be due to an issue with the Windows Servicing Store, which is used to apply updates, or because your antivirus software is blocking the update from being installed.

To try to repair the problem, perform these procedures and then reinstall SP1.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter:

If your PC is unable to discover or install updates, the Windows Update troubleshooter may be able to resolve the issue.

  1. Select the Start button, then Control Panel.
  2. Enter troubleshooter into the search box, and then choose Troubleshooting from the results.
  3. Under System and Security, click Fix difficulties with Windows Update and then follow the instructions.
  4. After the troubleshooter has completed, try installing the service pack again.

Download and install Windows SP1 from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

If you are unable to install SP1 via Windows Update, you can download the installation package from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it manually.

  1.  Visit Microsoft’s website and navigate to the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 download page.

2.  Select the Download link for your Windows 7 version.

3.  Select each download link and save it to your computer. When you’re ready to install SP1, launch the.exe file you got from the website. Then follow the installation instructions for SP1. Your computer may restart a few times during the installation.

4.  After SP1 has been installed, log in to your PC. You could receive a notice confirming that the update was successful. If you disabled your antivirus program before the installation, switch it on.
